In a Nutshell: RDP is a Protocol for remote access to a computer. This is a multi-channel network protocol that allows the user of a personal computer to connect to a Microsoft Windows-based computer or other operating systems such as Linux, FreeBSD, and Mac OS XO. The server reads port 3389 by default port 3389. It is used to solve technical and operational problems remotely as well as to control a computer by the user himself when he is out of the office.

How remote access works

Remote access bases its operation mainly on Virtual Private Networks, the so-called VPN (Virtual Private Networks).

A VPN enables the extension of a private network, such as a company’s network, to a public network, such as the internet.

These networks allow their users to send and receive data over common or public networks in the same way they would if their devices were connected directly to their private network.

This allows users to take advantage of the features, security, and management of their private network, while taking advantage of various VPN privileges such as the use of dedicated connections or the encryption services of the data being moved.

For example, think of an office worker who is away from his office, perhaps on the other side of the world for a business trip or vacation. He can quite simply open a remote desktop session on his office computer using a secure VPN over the internet.

This gives the employee full access to all his files and data, including e-mails and other applications, while away from the office.

However, while convenient, remote access may also hide some security risks.

It is no coincidence that many network experts often destate the original VPNs from Virtual Private Network to Virtual Private Nightmare, i.e. Virtual Private Nightmare.

This is because VPNs are often the source of some notable security breaches.
