The Ethereum Foundation has formed a dedicated post-quantum team to protect the network from future quantum attacks, Justin Drake stated last week (stated). The unit will be led by Thomas Coratger, who announced his PhD in applied mathematics focused on automotive and aeronautic work (announcement).
The foundation said timelines for practical quantum computing are accelerating after recent research advances. Vitalik Buterin previously warned quantum machines could break blockchain encryption before 2028.
The team will run bi-weekly developer calls and has launched a $1 million prize to improve quantum-resistant cryptography. A forthcoming website will outline a post-quantum transition that targets a full transition in coming years with zero loss of funds and zero downtime.
Researchers also reported using AI to solve a deep mathematical lemma after an eight-hour run, a result called “mind-blowing.” One researcher wrote that “Applied cryptography will never be the same.”
OP Labs, the team behind Optimism, said it will replace quantum-vulnerable components within ten years, and co-founder Karl Floersch wrote that “Users don’t need to take any action today.” He added the final schemes will be a community decision and that “PQ‑safe consensus is not optional.”
Active governance items related to development funding include votes for CoW DAO, GnosisDAO, and GMX DAO.
