Ethereum Debuts ERC-8004 Granting AI Agents On-Chain Identity

Ethereum has launched the ERC-8004 standard on its mainnet, introducing a universal identity and reputation system for AI agents. The new standard is designed to transform autonomous software into accountable economic actors on-chain. Its integration with the x402 payment protocol unifies work, evaluation, and payment into a single automated process. The system also enables global agent discovery and portable reputation across different decentralized platforms.


Ethereum introduced a major new building block for the AI and blockchain crossover with the launch of ERC-8004 on February 10. The standard provides AI agents a universal identity system with reputation tracking directly on the Ethereum mainnet.

The goal is to treat AI agents as accountable economic actors that can build history and earn trust. This move provides structure for a rapidly growing sector of autonomous agents operating across decentralized applications.

One significant change is the integration with the x402 payment standard to unify work and payment. This allows clients to verify tasks and pay for them programmatically within the same layer.

The standard also introduces a global discovery system, making agents discoverable worldwide across companies and protocols. Another key feature is portable trust, where an agent’s reviews and ratings are tied to itself rather than a single platform.

ERC-8004 aims to solve trust challenges by recording an agent’s history on-chain for independent client assessment. Developers can implement automated reputation verification systems into protocols to check agent credibility before granting permissions.

The ecosystem adoption is already underway with more than 10,000 agents registered on testnet. Over 20,000 feedback entries have been recorded according to Ethereum’s announcement.
