OpenAI Exec Fired Amid ChatGPT ‘Adult Mode’ Controversy

-

Former OpenAI executive Ryan Beiermeister was reportedly dismissed in January following allegations of sex discrimination after she voiced opposition to ChatGPT’s planned “adult mode” feature. OpenAI’s planned update would relax some safety restrictions for verified adults. The company also announced new age-prediction safety features for users under 18.

A former OpenAI executive was fired on discrimination claims after objecting to the company’s new adult content plans. Ryan Beiermeister, once vice president of product policy, was reportedly terminated after raising concerns about a proposed “adult mode” for ChatGPT.

The feature would allow verified adult users to engage in erotic conversations with the chatbot. A report stated that Beiermeister denied the allegations, calling them “absolutely false.” OpenAI stated her departure was unrelated to the issues she raised.

In October, CEO Sam Altman announced plans for a more natural, human-like ChatGPT update. He noted the changes would relax certain restrictions for adult users, “given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.”

Alongside these changes, OpenAI announced an age-prediction system to identify users under 18. This system analyzes account age, activity patterns, and usage trends to apply automatic, stricter safeguards.

The situation has intensified ongoing discussions around AI safety and corporate responsibility. It spotlights the debate over balancing adult-oriented features with robust protection for younger users.
