Aave founder Stani Kulechov states decentralized autonomous organizations require structural changes due to governance inefficiencies. He argues that while transparency and community input are strengths, day-to-day protocol operations need empowered leadership. His comments follow governance disputes within the Aave community, including a major delegate’s exit after a recent proposal process.
Stani Kulechov, founder of the Aave lending protocol, stated that decentralized autonomous organizations in their current form are “extraordinarily difficult” to operate. He cited internal conflicts and lengthy proposal processes involving weeks of forum posts and multiple votes.
Kulechov said DAOs quickly become politicized, with voting becoming about attention and participants forming political alliances. He noted that average DAO participation rates are estimated at only 15% to 25%, which can lead to power centralization.
He argued the path forward involves DAOs keeping what they got right, such as having rules in code and transparent treasuries. However, he contends token holders should not vote on everything, as running a protocol daily requires dedicated teams and leaders.
“Someone needs to wake up every morning with the full context in their head and make hard calls,” Kulechov stated. He added that on-chain transparency allows token holders to fire teams when objectives are not met, creating verifiable accountability different from traditional companies.
These comments follow governance disputes within the Aave ecosystem. A proposal called the “Aave Will Win Framework” passed a temperature check on March 1.
Soon after, a major governance delegate, the Aave Chan Initiative, announced it would wind down its involvement. This decision stemmed from concerns over governance standards and voting dynamics during the proposal process.
Another proposal in January to transfer control of Aave’s brand assets to its DAO had previously failed. That failure prompted renewed debate within the community over the protocol’s long-term direction and governance structure.
