A Wall Street analyst who claims to have analyzed 84 Microsoft earnings calls from the last two decades says the market is misreading the company’s recent performance. EMJ Capital founder Eric Jackson stated the sell-off stems from a disconnect between Microsoft‘s prospects and investor perception.
Jackson explained that CEO Satya Nadella has historically been a “cash machine” whose statements aligned perfectly with strong financial results. For the first time, however, Nadella recently spoke ahead of the numbers by emphasizing AI investments. The analyst contends Microsoft is deliberately slowing its Azure cloud service to prioritize AI spending, which hurt the stock.
Microsoft CFO Amy Hood recently stated that if the company’s GPUs had been allocated to Azure, its growth rate would have been 40% instead of 38%. The market reacted to this disclosure, causing Microsoft stock to drop sharply by 6% on April 4.
Jackson argues the management’s confidence in AI is a sign of strength, not a shortfall. He concluded that Wall Street is punishing the stock for statements favoring AI over cloud services, which is a strategic choice. Jackson stressed that Nadella is calculated and expects the AI focus to ultimately deliver results.
