Recently, in an interview and video, Sergei Lavrov warned that BRICS countries will reject Western attempts to centralize military AI control (watch). They are crafting separate rules and an AI alliance while India readies a summit, and Washington seeks to curb Russia’s military-technical ties.
“While each state has the right to determine its own approach, certain countries are already attempting to centralise control, subordinating what states can and may do with AI in the military sphere. BRICS members will not accept infringements on their sovereignty, yet transparency remains crucial.”
BRICS members cite faster economic growth and moves to reduce dependence on Western financial and technology systems. Russia has promoted a BRICS AI Alliance to support joint research and sovereign regulation (Ed. note: the summit is seen as pivotal).
“This is a serious diplomatic effort with direct practical consequences. These norms will regulate behaviours that affect security.”
