Buterin: AI Agents Build Ethereum Roadmap Prototype in Weeks

-

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has suggested AI could dramatically accelerate the network’s development timeline. This follows an experiment where AI agents built a working Ethereum client prototype aligned with long-term roadmap goals in just 14 days. Buterin emphasized that human oversight remains critical for security, even as the Hegota fork in 2026 is set to introduce major upgrades like account abstraction.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin suggested the network’s development could move at “AI speed” after a breakthrough experiment. AI agents reportedly built a working Ethereum client prototype covering 65 roadmap items in just two weeks, generating approximately 700,000 lines of code.

Buterin expressed excitement, stating, “This is quite an impressive experiment. Vibe-coding the entire 2030 roadmap within weeks.” The rapid progress raises serious concerns about security, as Ethereum has traditionally relied on careful human auditing.

Buterin cautioned that AI is not ready to replace developers, warning of bugs and inconsistencies. He added, “Do not assume that you’ll be able to put in a single prompt and get a highly-secure version out anytime soon.” He proposed splitting gains between speed and strengthened security.

Concurrently, Ethereum’s long-discussed account abstraction is scheduled for the Hegota fork in 2026. The upgrade, enabled by EIP-8141, will introduce “smart accounts” and features like paying fees in tokens other than ETH.

Buterin applauded the progress, stating, “Finally, after over a decade of research and refinement of these techniques, this all looks possible to make happen within a year.” This vision emerges as Ethereum trades near $1,984, with on-chain data showing high developer activity amid cautious market sentiment.
