Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has clarified that his past donation to the Future of Life Institute (FLI) does not signal agreement with the group’s current political stance on artificial intelligence regulation. Buterin expressed concern that large-scale political efforts to control AI development could lead to authoritarian outcomes or a global backlash, instead advocating for a technological approach focused on developing defensive tools for societal safety.
Vitalik Buterin has clarified that his previous donation to the Future of Life Institute does not mean he agrees with the group’s current political stance on AI. He explained his involvement originated from donating a portion of substantial Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens he received, which the institute later cashed out for approximately $500 million.
Buterin stated he was initially drawn to FLI for its broader roadmap covering existential risks and pro-peace initiatives. The organization has since pivoted to focus on cultural and political action, a shift it attributes to the changing landscape with the proliferation of advanced AI.
The Ethereum co-founder is concerned that concentrated political campaigns with significant funding could lead to unintended consequences. “My worry is that large-scale coordinated political action with big money pools is a thing that can easily lead to unintended outcomes, cause backlashes, and solve problems in a way that is both authoritarian and fragile,” he wrote.
He warned that strategies like imposing guardrails on AI models are fragile and could prompt governments to ban open-source systems. “Approaches like this VERY EASILY backfire,” Buterin stated, adding that “They make the rest of the world your enemy.”
His proposed solution is a technological focus on building defensive tools, such as secure hardware, to improve digital privacy and cybersecurity. Buterin noted his recent funding decisions include directing around $40 million toward this type of research.
