De Gaulle’s Grandson Urges France to Join BRICS, Sever U.S. Ties

-

Pierre de Gaulle, the grandson of former French President Charles de Gaulle, has called for France to leave Western alliances and join the BRICS bloc. He stated that France must rely on a multipolar world and reconsider its relations with an “aggressive and unpredictable” United States. This aligns with French President Emmanuel Macron’s earlier statements about building bridges with BRICS, though his attendance at a 2023 summit was reportedly blocked by China and Russia.

Pierre de Gaulle, grandson of former French President Charles de Gaulle, has publicly urged France to join the BRICS alliance. He argued the nation must embrace a multipolar world and be available to countries beyond the West. This statement comes amid ongoing tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump.

De Gaulle claimed France joining BRICS would create an interstate union and ensure a democratic balance of power. He further stated that France must “completely reconsider its relations with the US,” which he described as becoming aggressive in its attempt to control the world. The comments represent a direct critique of recent U.S. foreign policy, including tariffs and demands for European war financing.

European allies have increasingly expressed discomfort with U.S. policies under the Trump administration. These grievances range from trade wars to pressure over funding for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Several European Union leaders have repeatedly criticized the U.S. for this aggressive stance.

French President Emmanuel Macron previously showed interest in engaging with BRICS, aiming to attend the 2023 summit in Russia. China and Russia reportedly blocked his attendance, citing concerns he could sabotage the event. This period saw developing nations deeply skeptical of the West as de-dollarization efforts accelerated.

In January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Macron stated France would build bridges with BRICS and called for other EU nations to follow. He stressed an imbalance within the G7 bloc, emphasizing Europe’s need to stabilize relations with developing nations.
