Elon Musk Merges SpaceX With xAI to Build Orbital AI Data Centers

-

Entrepreneur Elon Musk announced that SpaceX has acquired his artificial intelligence company, xAI. The merger aims to develop orbital AI data centers powered by solar energy, a move Musk argues is necessary to meet surging global electricity demand. This consolidation positions the unified company at the forefront of integrating space technology with advanced AI computing.

SpaceX has acquired artificial intelligence firm xAI, according to an announcement by Elon Musk. The merger creates a single company combining AI, space technology, satellite internet, and communication systems into one innovation platform.

The primary goal is to develop data centers in space. In a memo on SpaceX’s website, Musk explained terrestrial data centers require immense power and cooling. “Global electricity demand for AI simply cannot be met with terrestrial solutions, even in the near term, without imposing hardship on communities and the environment,” he wrote.

The plan involves satellites acting as orbital data centers harnessing near-constant solar power. Musk argues this will dramatically expand computing capacity with minimal maintenance compared to Earth-based operations.

He framed the ambition as a step toward a Kardashev II-level civilization. “Launching a constellation of a million satellites that operate as orbital data centers is a first step towards becoming a Kardashev II-level civilization, one that can harness the Sun’s full power,” Musk stated.

The announcement follows reports SpaceX is considering an initial public offering as early as June 2026. Musk predicts space-based AI data centers will become the most cost-effective approach within two to three years. This could allow for faster, larger-scale AI model development.

The merger signals a bold step in Musk’s vision of integrating space, technology, and AI. It positions the company at the intersection of multiple cutting-edge industries, potentially reshaping competition in both the AI and space sectors.
