AI giant Anthropic secured a record $30 billion in funding at a $380 billion valuation, surpassing all but OpenAI. Elon Musk accused the company’s Claude AI of hating “Whites & Asians, especially Chinese, heterosexuals and men,” calling it “misanthropic and evil.” The attack coincides with significant departures from Musk’s own AI lab, xAI.
Anthropic announced a $30 billion Series G funding round, co-led by Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC and investment firm Coatue. The round values the company at $380 billion post-money, making it one of the most capitalized private companies globally and the most valuable AI lab outside of OpenAI.
According to its announcement, other investors included D. E. Shaw Ventures, Dragoneer, Founders Fund, ICONIQ, and MGX. The company stated its annualized run-rate revenue has reached $14 billion, growing more than 10x annually for three consecutive years.
In response to Anthropic’s tweet announcing the raise, Elon Musk launched a sharp attack. He tweeted “Your AI hates Whites & Asians, especially Chinese, heterosexuals and men. This is misanthropic and evil. Fix it.”
Musk added, “Frankly, I don’t think there is anything you can do to escape the inevitable irony of Anthropic ending up being Misanthropic.” The criticism comes during a period of turbulence for his own firm, xAI, where more than a dozen senior researchers departed recently.
Among those leaving were co-founders Jimmy Ba and Yuhuai “Tony” Wu, who led reasoning. The departures occurred between February 3 and 11, with some attributed to xAI’s pending integration with SpaceX.
Musk has a long-running feud with OpenAI, which he co-founded before stepping away in 2018. He has filed multiple lawsuits against the company in the last two years and accused it of abandoning its nonprofit mission.
Competition between Anthropic and OpenAI has intensified, with both releasing rival models within an hour of each other. Anthropic claims its Claude Code product now generates 4% of all public GitHub commits worldwide.
