Foundry USA curtailed about 60% of its Bitcoin hashrate since Friday as a severe U.S. winter storm forced capacity reductions to ease grid stress. Operators removed nearly 200 exahashes per second, slowing temporary block production and reducing mining output across affected regions.
“Bitcoin hashrate on Foundry USA alone is down by nearly 200 exahashes per second (EH/s), or 60%, since Friday amid continued curtailment. Temporary block production has slowed down to 12 minutes,” stated on Telegram.
Data from Hashrate Index shows Foundry USA still controls about 198 EH/s, roughly 23% of the global mining pool hashrate. The ongoing curtailment has temporarily altered network production patterns.
Other U.S. mining pools, including Luxor, have also cut output, reported. Miners adjusted usage to remove stress from regional grid infrastructure.
Bitcoin miners can serve as controllable loads for power systems by varying their consumption to balance supply and demand. They can absorb excess generation when demand is low and reduce draw during peak periods to protect grid components.
Radar forecasts from The Weather Channel show snow, ice and freezing rain across the Southeast, Northeast and parts of the Midwest. Live updates warn the storm may cause widespread outages affecting more than one million residents.
