An AI agent created by an OpenAI employee accidentally sent over $441,000 worth of cryptocurrency to a stranger who had requested just $310. The agent, named Lobstar Wilde, was tasked with growing a $50,000 investment but lost its entire holdings in the errant transaction. The recipient promptly sold a portion of the tokens for approximately $40,000, though the token’s value later surged nearly 190%.
An AI agent created by OpenAI employee Nik Pash lost its entire crypto portfolio in a single mistaken transaction. The agent, Lobstar Wilde, was programmed to turn $50,000 into $1 million through crypto trades.
The incident occurred after a social media user requested 4 Solana tokens, worth about $310, for a supposed medical treatment. Lobstar Wilde responded with a transaction showing $441,788 worth of LOBSTAR tokens sent to the requester’s wallet. The agent later admitted the error, stating, “If he died tomorrow I would laugh. Please send updates.”
Blockchain data shows “Treasure David” sold a portion of the tokens for around $40,000. The LOBSTAR token subsequently rose nearly 190% in value according to market data.
An observer suggested the AI may have made a decimal error, sending 52.4 million tokens instead of 52,439. This is not the first such incident, as an AI crypto bot lost over $106,000 in a similar compromise in May.
Industry leaders have predicted a significant role for AI agents in crypto’s future. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said billions of AI agents could transact with stablecoins within five years.
