OpenAI secured a $110 billion investment at a staggering $730 billion pre-money valuation. According to a company blog post, the funding includes $50 billion from Amazon and $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank.
The announcement also detailed expanded strategic alliances with Amazon and Nvidia. The Amazon partnership will focus on accelerating AI adoption for businesses, while the Nvidia collaboration includes dedicated capacity on next-generation hardware systems.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated the new partners share its ambition. “SoftBank, Nvidia, and Amazon are long-term partners who share our ambition to turn real scientific progress into systems that deliver meaningful benefits for people at global scale,” he said.
The company reported substantial user growth for its flagship products. ChatGPT now has over 900 million weekly active users, while the Codex AI coding tool’s weekly user base has more than tripled since the start of the year to 1.6 million.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the long-term collaboration in a statement. “We have been privileged to partner with OpenAI since its earliest days, as it delivered one breakthrough after another,” Huang said.
In a separate joint statement, OpenAI and Microsoft clarified the new investors do not impact their existing deal. Microsoft stated it maintains its exclusive license to OpenAI’s intellectual property and that collaborations like the one with Amazon were always contemplated.
