Pump.fun restricts fee changes for memecoin creators amid falling revenue

-

The memecoin launchpad Pump.fun has restricted creators to a single post-launch change to their token’s fee distribution addresses. According to co-founder Alon Cohen, the update aims to curb “griefing” and manipulation where creators alter fee recipients after a token gains traction. This follows broader changes by the platform to shift incentives from deployers to traders.

Pump.fun introduced a restriction limiting token creators to one post-launch change to their fee recipient configuration. After that single change, the setup becomes permanently locked, a move co-founder Alon Cohen stated aims to reduce “griefing” and manipulation tied to fee redirection. The update follows a broader overhaul the platform announced in January.

That earlier overhaul acknowledged that the creator-fee model had skewed incentives by disproportionately rewarding token deployers. On Jan. 10, the platform introduced changes like multi-wallet distribution and post-launch controls to improve transparency. A subsequent change on Feb. 17 introduced “Cashback Coins,” requiring creators to lock in their chosen high-level fee model at launch.

However, creators could still adjust the specific wallets receiving fees after launch. The latest update narrows that flexibility to just one change, after which the configuration is permanently locked. Early community reactions on social media were mixed, with one user noting the change might not help much.

Pump.fun’s activity has declined significantly from peak levels last year. Data from DefiLlama shows the platform recorded $31.8 million in fees in January 2026, down about 75% from $148 million in January 2025. In February 2026, monthly trading volume totaled about $1.91 billion, which represented a 68% decline from the $6.1 billion recorded in February 2025.
