Early trials with quantum-safe signatures caused a 90% slowdown in transaction speed, directly challenging the high-throughput advantage that has powered its growth. This comes as the blockchain’s strategic diversification into non-USD stablecoins shows significant adoption, but the technical compromise raises critical questions about its ability to maintain speed, scalability, and security simultaneously.
The Solana blockchain is testing quantum-safe signatures with Project Eleven to guard against future attacks. Early results indicate these signatures are up to 40 times larger and caused the network to run roughly 90% slower.
This creates a clear trade-off between advanced security and the transaction speed that defines the network. The trade-off is clear: Either lock in security and slow down, or keep speed and take on more risk.
Speed has been Solana‘s defining advantage, particularly over Ethereum. Chainspect data shows Solana has processed 31 times more total transactions than Ethereum, reaching 106 billion.
This scalability stems from high throughput, with the network handling 1,191 real-time transactions per second compared to Ethereum’s 25.99. This capability has supported major growth in decentralized finance (DeFi) activity and on-chain liquidity.
Concurrently, Solana is diversifying its stablecoin ecosystem beyond dollar-pegged assets. Dune data showed Unique Senders of non-USD stablecoins on the network nearly tripled year-on-year.
Adoption was driven specifically by EURC and BRZ stablecoins. From a strategic standpoint, this move lays groundwork for broader DeFi expansion.
