Scammers Impersonate RCMP in New Crypto Recovery Fraud Targeting Victims

-

Canadian police warn of a sophisticated “recovery scam” targeting previous cryptocurrency fraud victims. A Nanaimo resident lost $5,000 in late 2025 to a fake crypto job offer. Months later, scammers posing as recovery lawyers using a forged Royal Canadian Mounted Police logo contacted the victim, claiming to have found $60,000 in their name.

Police in Canada are reporting a new cryptocurrency recovery scam where fraudsters used the logo of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to appear legitimate. The case involves a Nanaimo resident who initially lost money to a fake online job offer in late 2025.

The victim received a text promoting a work-from-home crypto trading opportunity requiring a $5,000 deposit. After the payment was made via a crypto ATM, the scammers ceased communication. Months later, the victim encountered an online notice using RCMP branding encouraging fraud reporting.

After submitting a form, the victim was contacted by a man identifying as “Sam Peterson,” a crypto recovery lawyer with a firm called Helprpc. The caller claimed to have discovered two cryptocurrency wallets in the victim’s name containing roughly $60,000 in profits and offered to help recover the funds.

The victim grew suspicious and checked lawyer credentials through the Law Society of British Columbia and the Law Society of Ontario, where no such person was registered. Police confirmed the associated website was not functional and the offer was a secondary scam targeting prior fraud victims.

The RCMP officially stated it does not contact individuals about crypto recovery or work with private firms to recover lost funds. “Any message claiming otherwise should be treated as fraudulent,” authorities warned. They urged caution regarding unexpected job offers involving cryptocurrency or requiring deposits through crypto ATMs.
