Seven leading AI companies have signed a White House pledge to pay for the electricity and grid upgrades required by their data centers. The “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” signed by Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI, aims to prevent increased energy costs from being passed to consumers. The move addresses growing concerns that soaring AI infrastructure demand could strain U.S. power grids and raise household electricity bills.
Seven major tech companies have committed to covering the costs of the electricity their new AI data centers will consume. The companies signed the White House’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge to build, buy, or bring new power generation and fund necessary grid upgrades.
President Donald Trump announced the agreement, stating the firms will pay for all power generation and delivery infrastructure tied to their projects. The pledge is designed to ensure the data center boom does not increase electricity costs for American households.
The commitment comes amid local opposition to data centers over their electricity and water use. It also follows global energy market tightening after U.S. strikes on Iran, which controls a key oil shipping route.
Under the pledge, companies must finance transmission lines and substations, even if unused. They will also negotiate separate electricity rate structures with utilities to shield consumers from costs.
In a statement, the White House said the pledge contributes to lower costs and stronger grid resilience. White House science adviser Michael Kratsios said, “American AI leadership should never come at the cost of hard-working Americans’ ability to pay their electricity bills.”
Company representatives emphasized their investments in new power capacity. xAI stated it is committed to adding more power near its data centers to reduce energy costs.
Amazon noted in a statement that meeting growing energy demand is essential for affordability and reliability. Meta President Dina Powell said the company wants to fully cover its energy costs while creating jobs for technicians and electricians.
Google President Ruth Porat said AI must be powered by abundant, affordable energy to benefit all Americans. She noted the company has contracted for over 7,800 megawatts of new energy generation in Texas alone to support its data center growth.
