Uber Partners with AWS to Use AI Chips for Faster Rides and Deliveries

-

Uber Technologies is expanding its real-time infrastructure on AWS, utilizing Amazon’s custom AI chips to accelerate computing and train artificial intelligence models per a press release from the latter. The ride-sharing giant is using AWS Graviton instances to support more Trip Serving Zones and has begun piloting model training on Trainium chips. This aims to speed up service, reduce latency, and optimize costs for millions of daily rides and deliveries while reducing energy consumption. Both companies’ stocks saw slight declines on Tuesday but have risen over the past week.

Both UBER and AMZN stock declined fractionally on Tuesday as most stocks slipped. The companies’ shares have risen over the last week as this partnership develops.

Specifically, Uber is deploying AWS Graviton instances for more Trip Serving Zones, the infrastructure behind each ride and delivery. The company has started pilot training some AI models on Trainium chips to enable faster matching and smarter experiences.

This expansion uses AWS compute, storage, and networking to power real-time operations for Trip Serving Zones. Running more workloads on AWS Graviton4 helps Uber reduce energy consumption while scaling rapidly during demand spikes.

“Uber operates at a scale where milliseconds matter,” said Kamran Zargahi, vice president of engineering at Uber. “Moving more Trip Serving workloads to AWS gives us the flexibility to match riders and drivers faster and handle delivery demand spikes without disruption.”

Rich Geraffo, vice president and managing director of North America at AWS, stated “Uber is one of the most demanding real-time applications in the world, and we’re proud to be an important part of the infrastructure powering their global operations.” He added the partnership helps deliver reliability today and AI-powered experiences for tomorrow.
