UK Gambling Commission Explores Crypto Payments for Online Gambling

-

The UK Gambling Commission is investigating whether to permit licensed online gambling operators to accept cryptocurrency payments. Executive Director Tim Miller stated the regulator is determining a potential path forward for crypto integration that maintains affordability checks. Any implementation would require firms to secure authorization from the Financial Conduct Authority under the new cryptoasset regime expected in late 2027.

The UK Gambling Commission is examining whether licensed online casinos and betting platforms should be allowed to accept cryptocurrency payments. Executive Director Tim Miller stated that the regulator is looking to determine “the potential path forward” for integrating crypto assets without compromising affordability checks.

Any approved plan would mandate that firms obtain Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) authorization under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. This aligns with the forthcoming cryptoasset regime scheduled to launch in October 2027.

Miller noted that crypto-related inquiries are a primary reason users visit illegal gambling websites. A regulated crypto payment method could redirect those users toward licensed operators instead.

A system enforcing identity verification, source-of-funds checks, and anti-money laundering controls would likely reduce exposure to unlicensed platforms. The main challenges identified include crypto volatility, custody and exchange compliance, and operators meeting suitability standards.

The FCA’s final consultation paper outlines ten proposals for crypto markets, with full implementation expected by late 2027. An application window for firms is set to open in September 2026.

Companies offering regulated crypto services must receive FCA permission. Those failing to meet the deadline will face transitional rules that limit new product introductions.

The Gambling Commission has tasked its Industry Forum with developing a “reasonable” roadmap for crypto payments. No definitive timeline for completion has been announced.
