Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has publicly distanced himself from the Future of Life Institute (FLI), a group he supported with a massive Shiba Inu (SHIB) token donation in 2021. Buterin stated the organization’s current focus on political advocacy for AI risk mitigation diverges from its original broader mission, which he endorsed. He also expressed concern that FLI’s approach could lead to unintended authoritarian outcomes.
Vitalik Buterin said he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute. He stated the group originally pitched a broad roadmap for reducing existential risks, which motivated his Shiba Inu (SHIB) donation.
Buterin said FLI later moved toward cultural and political advocacy around AI risks. He described this as materially different from the strategy outlined during the donation.
“My worry is that large-scale coordinated political action with big money pools is a thing that can easily lead to unintended outcomes, cause backlashes, and solve problems in a way that is both authoritarian and fragile, even if it was not originally intended that way,” he wrote. He also criticized specific technical safeguards proposed by the group as fragile and easy to circumvent.
The FLI states its mission is to steer transformative technologies to benefit humanity. “We need policies to help ensure that AI development improves lives everywhere – rather than merely boosts corporate profits,” the organization says.
In 2021, Buterin received large amounts of SHIB tokens from developers. He later allocated a portion of these tokens to charitable causes, including FLI.
Buterin said he did not expect the donated tokens’ value to reach roughly half a billion dollars. “Instead, they managed to cash out something like $500 million,” he wrote. FLI had announced a $25 million grants program was made possible by this support.
