Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined the network’s core technological purpose as a censorship-resistant public bulletin board for cryptographic protocols. He emphasized payments using Ethereum and zero-knowledge channels for API services and anti-spam, while describing smart contracts as an important programmable layer that expands the broader ecosystem’s functionality.
Vitalik Buterin recently shared new thoughts on the core purpose of the Ethereum network. His reflection focused on understanding what blockchains contribute as technology rather than as a specific ecosystem.
Buterin stated he believes the network’s greatest purpose is to be a censorship-resistant public bulletin board. This shared space allows systems like voting or certificate revocation to function with verified data.
The decentralized network is provided by Ethereum, with its data capacity boosted by the recent PeerDAS update. Buterin highlighted payments as the next critical aspect for digital systems.
He says many systems will require small payments to prevent spam and pay for computing power. The payment system also allows permissionless APIs to stay open while reducing abuse.
Buterin mentioned using Ethereum enables fast payment methods with zero-knowledge payment channels. This configuration helps developers manage service credits while maintaining privacy and security.
It is also useful in preventing Sybil attacks where users create many malicious accounts. Small ETH payments prevent abuse without requiring identification like phone numbers.
Smart contracts are the third major component of Ethereum’s value. Buterin said they are more of a programming method than the defining aspect.
They allow creation of features like security deposits that destroy funds when rules are violated. Smart contracts enable payment channels and let digital objects interact.
In theory, these tasks could use Ethereum only as a data bulletin board with cryptographic proofs. But smart contracts can make development simpler and inter-app cooperation smoother.
Buterin concluded Ethereum is most effective as a technical tool providing shared global memory. He shared these views after attending the Real World Crypto conference and related side events.
