Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sold approximately $7.3 million worth of ETH over 72 hours according to on-chain data. The sales appear connected to a “mild austerity” funding plan for ecosystem development. Despite the liquidation, Buterin retains a significant holding of over 224,000 ETH, valued at roughly $429 million.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin sold nearly $7.3 million worth of ETH in 72 hours. On-chain data shows he sold 3,788.57 ETH as markets experienced broad declines.
Buterin had announced earlier this month that the Ethereum Foundation would enter a period of “mild austerity.” The organization required funding for ecosystem growth, research grants, and open-source development.
Analysis indicates Buterin has sold over 8,800 ETH, worth between $16 million and $18 million, since the start of the month. One sale of 1,869 ETH was valued at approximately $3.67 million.
These transactions coincided with a 5.7% decline in ETH’s price. The market reaction to founder-led sales often creates instability among retail investors.
Buterin has not exited his position, with his primary wallet still holding more than 224,000 ETH. The stash has an approximate total value of $429 million.
The sales represent a small portion of his overall holdings. They are framed as supporting a commitment to fund ongoing ecosystem development.
