Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sold over 18,000 ETH, exceeding his previously stated plan to dispose of 16,384 ETH. On-chain data reported by Lookonchain shows total sales now valued at more than $38 million. The acceleration in disposals comes as Ethereum struggles in a prolonged downtrend, having lost nearly 60% of its value since its all-time high.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sold more than 18,000 ETH, surpassing his announced target. On-chain data from Lookonchain indicates total disposals have reached 18,684 ETH, valued at over $38 million.
Buterin initially disclosed his plan on January 31, 2026, stating he had withdrawn 16,384 ETH to fund development projects. He characterized the move as part of a period of “mild austerity” for the Ethereum Foundation.
The selling began in early February and accelerated significantly in recent days. According to analyst Ted Pillows, Buterin sold another $2.83 million worth of ETH in a single recent period.
Despite the substantial sales, data from Arkham Intelligence shows Buterin remains a major holder. His associated wallets still contain more than 240,000 ETH.
Ethereum’s price has been volatile during this period, currently trading around $2,050. Analyst Ali Martinez noted the broader decline coincides with significant ETF outflows. Institutional products have offloaded about $1.13 billion worth of ETH over the last five weeks.
