X, the app led by Elon Musk, is building a feature called Smart Cashtags that will link ticker symbols in posts to real-time financial data, the company’s head of product, Nikita Bier, said in a post on Sunday. The tool, aimed at reducing ticker confusion, will appear in-app and targets a public rollout next month while the company collects user feedback.
Tapping a Smart Cashtag will open an in-app page that shows live prices, price changes, charts, and related posts. The feature will let users tag specific stocks, crypto assets, or even individual smart contracts when posting symbols like $BTC or $NVDA.
X said it will sometimes identify assets by their underlying smart contract addresses to address symbol overlap in crypto markets. The company did not disclose whether Smart Cashtags will include trading, payments, or monetization elements.
The project fits into Elon Musk’s stated goal to expand the app into broader financial services and payments. Linda Yaccarino had previously announced plans for in-app investing and trading before she resigned, and Nikita Bier joined the company around that time.
Bier is an advisor to Solana, a venture partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners, and previously worked at xAI and Meta. The article included an embedded market example from an external market embed, and the company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
