New data reveals AI-driven shopping traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 393% year-over-year in Q1 2026, with these automated shoppers now converting 42% better than human traffic. Adobe reports that AI visitors spend 48% more time on site and generate 37% higher revenue per visit. The shift toward agentic commerce is prompting legal disputes and infrastructure concerns, as McKinsey projects this AI-driven purchasing could represent $1 trillion in U.S. retail revenue by 2030.


AI-driven traffic to U.S. retail sites grew 393% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to new data from Adobe Analytics. Shoppers arriving from AI sources are now spending more, staying longer, and buying at higher rates than all other traffic.

In March 2025, AI traffic converted 38% worse than standard non-AI sources. By March 2026, Adobe reports this traffic was converting 42% better, setting a new record.

The engagement data shows AI-assisted shoppers spend 48% more time on a page and browse 13% more pages per visit. “AI is quickly becoming the primary interface between consumers and their favorite brands,” Vivek Pandya, director of Adobe Digital Insights, wrote in the report.

This surge is creating significant business and legal implications. Amazon and Perplexity recently had a legal dispute in federal court over whether AI agents can make purchases without platform consent.

The rapid adoption highlights a structural problem, as a significant portion of retail websites aren’t fully readable by AI models. Individual product pages scored an average of just 66% on Adobe‘s AI Content Visibility Checker, creating a critical gap where purchase decisions occur.
