France Sees 41 Crypto Kidnappings in Early 2026, Fueled by Data Leaks

-

France is experiencing a surge in cryptocurrency-related kidnappings, with 41 cases recorded in the first 3.5 months of 2026 alone. Telegram founder Pavel Durov has linked the trend to data leaks from tax authorities, alleging that criminals are using exposed investor details to identify and target victims. The situation highlights growing security concerns for crypto holders as organized crime groups expand their operations.

Crypto kidnappings are rising in France, with Pavel Durov warning that leaked tax and investor data may be exposing holders to organized crime. He linked the increase to the misuse of sensitive financial records.

In a post on X, Durov stated that exposed data is helping criminals locate targets. He stated that access to names, addresses, and financial links makes tracking easier.

In early 2026, France has registered approximately 41 incidents related to crypto kidnappings. Cases are being reported every 2.5 days, indicating a regular trend.

This trend is illustrated by several violent cases from recent years. In January 2025, a co-founder of Ledger was kidnapped during a ransom demand.

Durov specifically mentioned a 2025 case of a former tax official, Ghalia C., who was arrested for selling investor information. Criminal groups were reportedly using such purchased and leaked data to identify victims.

According to him, such leaks pose more risks to crypto holders. When data is exposed, high-value targets become easier for criminals to discover.

High-profile cases have contributed to the fear among investors. In one instance, a family was kidnapped on the condition of a ransom payment of 400,000 euros (approximately $430,000).

French officials have affirmed that they are investigating these crimes and have made arrests related to organized groups. They state that protecting investors is now a priority.

Durov condemned the wider availability of personal information, claiming it increases risks. He also said Telegram may exit France due to privacy issues.
