Macron urges Europe to build bridges to BRICS at Davos, back multilateralism vs US tariffs

-

On Tuesday, Emmanuel Macron addressed the 56th Annual Summit of the World Economic Forum 2026 in Davos, Switzerland. He urged Europe to deepen ties with developing countries and to strengthen multilateralism.

Macron said governments must tackle global imbalances through security, defence, and economic measures. He added “Another objective (for France and Europe) is to build bridges and more cooperation with emerging countries, the BRICS, and the G20, because the fragmentation of this world would not make sense,” stressing cooperation with BRICS and the G20.

He set out aims for the G7 to foster coordinated responses to systemic gaps. He said “The objective of this G7 will be to build a framework of cooperation to address the roots of these imbalances and restore efficient convergence and cooperation through multilateral frameworks,” to reinforce collective action.

In 2023, Macron sought to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, but China and Russia rejected the request. (Ed. note: They cited concerns that France could gain internal information and undermine summit discussions.)

Since then, Macron has publicly praised the alliance and its handling of global finance and U.S. policy. He concluded, “Faced with the brutalisation of the world, France and Europe must defend effective multilateralism because it serves our interests and those of all who refuse to submit to the rule of force,” urging unified action.
