The U.S. Treasury announced that President Donald Trump’s signature will appear on future paper currency, breaking a 165-year tradition. This move, part of the U.S. Semiquincentennial, will also feature the signature of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The decision coincides with broader commemorative efforts, including proposed Trump-themed coins and his established presence in the cryptocurrency space through meme coins and NFTs.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury stated that Donald Trump will become the first sitting president to have his signature on U.S. paper currency. This action marks the nation’s 250th anniversary and will also include the signature of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S. dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial,” Bessent said. Until now, only the treasurer and Treasury secretary’s signatures traditionally appeared on bills.
The first $100 bills featuring the new signatures will be printed in June, with other denominations to follow later. A report from Reuters confirmed the timeline for this change.
This fiscal commemoration extends to coinage, as the U.S. Mint released three proposed $1 coin designs bearing Trump’s face in late 2025. The designs include the caption “In God We Trust” and could enter circulation for the anniversary.
Separately, Trump’s name has been added to major landmarks like the performing arts center in Washington. The board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, voted to change its name to the “Donald J. Trump and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”
Some lawmakers have argued this renaming is illegal without congressional authorization. This pushback highlights the controversial nature of these commemorative actions.
In the cryptocurrency world, Trump already has a meme coin named after him. He has also released multiple NFT projects, including the Trump Digital Trading Cards.
