U.S. Halts Anthropic’s Latest AI Models Citing National Security Jailbreak Risk

-

The U.S. government ordered Anthropic to suspend global access to its two most advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, citing a national security concern over a potential jailbreak vulnerability. Anthropic complied but disputed the severity, arguing the flaw is simple and already replicable with other public models like GPT-5.5. The company warned the directive sets a dangerous precedent that could halt all new frontier AI model deployments if applied industry-wide.

The U.S. government issued an emergency export control directive ordering Anthropic to immediately suspend access to its two most powerful artificial intelligence models for all foreign nationals. The sweeping order forced Anthropic to disable the newly released Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 for its entire customer base to ensure compliance.

The government believes it has identified a method of jailbreaking the publicly available Fable 5 model, while Mythos 5 is particularly powerful at discovering cybersecurity exploits. Anthropic said it reviewed a demonstration and concluded the vulnerabilities appear relatively simple and are already widely available from competing models.

While complying, the company stated, “If this standard was applied across the industry, we believe it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers.” Access to all other Anthropic models remains unaffected as the company works to restore access.

On Saturday, David Sacks—the co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology—wrote on X that a trusted partner presented a jailbreak and the administration asked CEO Dario Amodei to fix it or de-deploy the model. Sacks claimed, “Anthropic prioritized the continued offering of the consumer model over safety,” and that the administration issued the export control reluctantly.

Sacks added that the administration hopes Anthropic will fix the issue so Fable 5 can return to public release. This incident follows a earlier standoff when Anthropic refused to sign an expanded agreement on surveillance and autonomous weapons, leading President Donald Trump to slam the company and the Department of Defense to label it a supply chain risk.
