Visa and Nium test 7-day stablecoin settlement in Singapore’s BLOOM pilot

-

Visa has joined Singapore’s BLOOM initiative, selecting Nium as its first partner to test seven-day stablecoin settlement. The pilot, led by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, will explore cross-border settlement using dollar- and euro-backed stablecoins on weekends and public holidays. The program aims to connect stablecoin rails with traditional payment security and compliance controls. The test will focus on settlement processes rather than consumer payment initiation, examining whether regulated stablecoins can resolve settlement delays during non-banking hours. Visa and Nium have not disclosed which specific stablecoins will be used in the trial.

As reported, the Monetary Authority of Singapore leads BLOOM. It will examine how financial institutions can connect traditional payment systems with stablecoin rails during periods when ordinary bank settlement is unavailable.

Nium will become Visa’s first partner in this setup. Visa and Nium will test stablecoin settlement during weekends and public holidays.

The test will study whether regulated stablecoins solve settlement delays. Neither company disclosed what stablecoins would be tested.

Adeline Kim, Visa regional Southeast Asia Group Country Manager, said different types of money will require interconnectivity. “The future of payments will be shaped by how different forms of money and payment networks work together for different use cases,” Kim added.

BLOOM was launched by the Monetary Authority of Singapore in 2025. The project deals with payment systems using tokenized bank liabilities and regulated stablecoins.

Previous participants included Circle, DBS, OCBC, Partior, Stripe, and UOB. Another BLOOM test was announced in March involving Ripple and Unloq.

Visa has previously expanded its stablecoin capabilities. These include handling USDC and euro-based EURC through their settlement platform.

Visa’s Chief Executive Ryan McInerney called this strategy “multi-coin, multi-chain.” He noted the company would not favor any particular stablecoin as a winner.

The pilot will aim at continuous settlement with control mechanisms intact. It will cover cross-border settlements out of business hours throughout the week.
