Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled a new vision for the network at the 2026 Shanghai Blockchain International Week, proposing that Ethereum shift from executing every transaction to serving as a global trust layer for computation. Under this plan, actual computations would occur off-chain, with only zero-knowledge proofs verified on the Ethereum blockchain. Buterin outlined that ZK proofs will be the foundation for scalability, while privacy will become a programmable feature. The actual computations would be done off the blockchain, with only the proofs verified on Ethereum. Buterin outlined that zero-knowledge proofs will be the foundation for scalability on the network.
Privacy will become a programmable feature under this vision, with Ethereum acting as the final verifier before transactions are recorded. This vision has been outlined in Buterin’s research and proposals such as EIP-8288.
The first pillar of the vision is a transition from re-execution to verification. Instead of every node repeating the same computation, external systems perform work and generate a ZK proof, and Ethereum verifies correctness.
For L2s such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and zkSync, this reinforces the rollup-centric roadmap where L1 security is inherited without L1 executing everything. Complex workloads can be split, processed in parallel, and compressed before verification.
At the heart of the vision is the idea of moving past letting everything happen openly on-chain toward choosing what gets shown. Buterin talked about how apps might handle visibility from the start so private finance, enterprise uses, and identity do not need everything out in the open.
The whole flow starts on a device, moves into private pools where builders put things together, before L2s run it and Ethereum checks the end result. Quantum resilience is also part of the vision, as STARKs rely on hash-based cryptography.
Prover complexity remains messy, and costs rise when privacy is preserved. Under the vision, EIP-8288 still needs real-world testing before it settles in.
