According to the filing, Alphabet could not sell $80 billion worth of shares for a short period, while the remaining shares cannot be sold until late 2027. The investment represents approximately a 6% stake in SpaceX, though Alphabet has not disclosed the exact percentage or acquisition cost.

Alphabet’s involvement with SpaceX first began in 2015, when Google invested $900 million out of a $1 billion funding round alongside Fidelity. Over the years, the two companies have collaborated on cloud computing, satellite connections, and AI infrastructure.

In 2021, Google Cloud agreed to partner with Starlink to provide cloud services and install ground stations using Google’s data centers. In June 2026, Alphabet entered into a $30 billion agreement with SpaceX, paying $920 million each month for AI computing infrastructure, and secured more than 110,000 Nvidia GPUs until 2029.

Alphabet’s investment gains in the second quarter reached $99 billion, driven largely by the SpaceX stake. Investor interest in SpaceX Stock has increased as institutional ownership became known after the public listing on Nasdaq.

Tesla also recorded a $1 billion gain from its SpaceX position in the second quarter. Despite this institutional involvement, SpaceX’s stock has declined 27% since its public offering. Investors are expected to focus on regulatory filings, lock-up periods, and Alphabet’s long-term strategy regarding the stake.
