Coinbase cbBTC Debuts on Robinhood Chain via Chainlink CCIP Bridge

-

Coinbase’s wrapped Bitcoin token cbBTC will launch on Robinhood Chain, expanding its multichain presence. Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol will serve as the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure, providing programmable token transfers and security measures against bridge attacks that have cost the industry over $2.5 billion. cbBTC, which crossed $1.5 billion in market cap since its September 2024 launch, will now reach Robinhood’s 25 million active users and new DeFi applications. The integration reflects a broader shift toward standardized cross-chain bridges.

Coinbase will debut its wrapped Bitcoin token cbBTC on Robinhood Chain, representing a major upgrade to the exchange’s multichain footprint. Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) will be exclusively used as the cross-chain infrastructure, serving as the canonical bridge to carry the asset out of its native environments.

Robinhood Chain is the first step for Robinhood to launch a layer-2 platform, aiming to offer its 25 million active customers better access to blockchain-based assets. For Coinbase, launching cbBTC on Robinhood Chain is part of a strategy to go beyond distribution on its own Base and Ethereum networks.

Chainlink CCIP supports programmable token transfers and defense-in-depth security, which is essential given the damage caused by recent bridge attacks that have resulted in cumulative losses to the industry of over $2.5 billion, as stated in financial reports. cbBTC has surged since its launch in September 2024, crossing a $1.5 billion market cap on CoinMarketCap and becoming a real threat to BitGo’s WBTC and Threshold’s tBTC.

Listing cbBTC on Robinhood Chain exposes the wrapped Bitcoin to new retail users and DeFi use cases such as lending, collateral trading, and yield generation. This move intensifies competition in the wrapped Bitcoin market as custody models and transparency continue to be questioned.

The CCIP integration signals a broader movement of issuers moving away from proprietary bridges toward standardized cross-chain infrastructure embraced by large institutions, as highlighted in industry analysis. Regulatory clarity on wrapped assets, reserve attestations, and cross-chain messages will ultimately determine adoption and manage institutional risk.
