The Crypto Fear and Greed Index surged 16 points to 62 on August 20, shifting from “Fear” to “Greed” in a single day as Bitcoin’s price broke above $72,000. The rally began from below $65,000 on August 19, catching traders who had bet on lower prices off guard. Over $1.44 billion in short positions were liquidated in 24 hours, with Bitcoin alone accounting for $861 million of those losses. The index had stood at 29 just one week earlier and at 25 a month ago, indicating “Extreme Fear.” Despite the rapid sentiment change, a reading of 62 does not guarantee further price increases.
The Crypto Fear and Greed Index jumped to 62 on August 20, up 16 points from 46 the previous day. The shift accompanied Bitcoin’s rally beyond $72,000, a move that reversed a period of deep bearish sentiment.
One day earlier, the index was firmly in “Fear” territory. Last week, it stood at 29, and one month ago it was at 25, putting the market in “Extreme Fear.”
Bitcoin was trading around $72,465 at the time of writing and briefly reached $72,868. The rally began on August 19 when Bitcoin was below $65,000, before other assets followed its lead.
Ethereum and other major altcoins also saw price increases, along with crypto-related stocks. On the same day, President Donald Trump renewed his push for Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, keeping crypto policy in focus, though neither development alone explains the sharp rally.
Many traders had placed bets on crypto prices to keep falling, but the market moved the other way. Over $1.61 billion in total liquidations occurred in 24 hours on August 19, with about $1.44 billion from traders betting on lower prices.
Bitcoin saw $861 million of those short losses, while Ethereum accounted for another $424 million. The scale of those losses helps explain why sentiment changed so quickly, but a Fear and Greed reading of 62 does not mean price will continue higher.
