Crypto Fear & Greed Index Barely Moves as Bitcoin Price Swings Wildly

-

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index currently reads 40, showing minimal change in 24 hours but a notable pattern over the past month. The index has remained in a narrow band between 28 and neutral 40, despite historical extremes of 68 (greed) in mid-August last year and 5 (extreme fear) in February. Meanwhile, Bitcoin experienced multiple price cycles with swings toward $66,500 and pullbacks. The total crypto market capitalization saw similar 5‑7% fluctuations. This divergence between volatile prices and flat sentiment may indicate trader indifference or indecision.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index registered a reading of 40 at press time, barely moving in the last 24 hours. According to data from CoinMarketCap, the index has shown a more interesting pattern over the course of a month.

The index’s history demonstrates its capacity for extremes. It reached 68 in mid-August last year and plunged to 5 as recently as February. This month’s range of 28 to neutral 40 suggests the index may be compressing into a narrow band despite having the full range available.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin has seen repeated full cycles this month, including a run toward $66,500, a slide back near $64,000, another spike past $65,000, and another pullback. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization similarly experienced multiple 5-7% swings, climbing to $2.25 trillion, dropping to $2.14 trillion, bouncing to $2.2 trillion, and falling back to $2.14 trillion before recovering to $2.2 trillion by early August.

It was previously reported that the index had stayed in fear territory continuously since July 10. This occurred despite leverage returning to perpetual markets in early August.

It is unnatural for the market not to sway while prices do, which makes the current fear and greed index run of the month spell indifference. Either traders have grown numb to volatility inside this range, or they genuinely cannot decide which way to lean even as prices swing wildly in both directions. A flat sentiment reading during an active market removes one of the more useful contrarian signals that traders rely on.
