CXMT’s 470% Surge Threatens Micron, SK Hynix, Samsung’s AI Memory Chip Grip

-

The AI memory chip market, historically dominated by the “big three”—Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung Electronics—faces a new competitive force from China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). Upon its market debut, CXMT’s share price surged over 470%, giving the company a valuation of 3.3 trillion yuan ($487.3 billion), making it the most valuable company in mainland China. While still smaller than the established leaders, the ongoing memory chip shortage could help CXMT close the gap. Micron recently reported being sold out for the next few years, and rising AI demand may lead chip manufacturers to turn to CXMT for supply, potentially creating a “big four” in the sector.

The global AI chip industry relies heavily on a small group of memory chip manufacturers, historically dominated by Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung Electronics. This “big three” now faces potential competition from China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT).

Share prices of CXMT surged by more than 470% upon its debut. The company’s valuation hit 3.3 trillion yuan ($487.3 billion), making CXMT the most valuable company in mainland China.

While CXMT remains smaller than the established leaders, the ongoing memory chip shortage could help it close the gap. In its recent earnings report, Micron stated that the company is sold out for the next few years.

With AI demand rising, chip manufacturers could turn to ChangXin to provide the necessary memory chips to maintain supply. While CXMT may make a big splash, it is unlikely to destroy the “big three.”

The sector may soon see the emergence of a “big four” in the AI memory chip market. Micron has had a successful ride over the last year, recently announcing a $250 billion investment plan in the US to ramp up domestic production.

Being the only US-based company among the top names puts Micron in a favorable position. Wall Street is extremely bullish on Micron’s future, with several analysts increasing their stock price target to new heights.
