Galaxy Digital has launched a $5 million grant program to advance Bitcoin’s quantum security defenses. The initiative funds development of wallet migration tools, transaction upgrades, and post-quantum cryptography. A newly formed advisory council will oversee research and evaluate proposals. Galaxy Research will publish studies on quantum risks and potential network responses. The program comes as BitGo introduced quantum risk scoring for institutional clients and Blockstream prioritized post-quantum cryptography in its Q2 2026 roadmap. Galaxy emphasizes that preparation must begin early, as any protocol upgrade requires years of coordination across developers, miners, and businesses.
Galaxy Digital has launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative to address threats from quantum computers. The company will provide up to $5 million in grants for developers building post-quantum solutions, including wallet migration tools, transaction upgrades, and security reviews.
Galaxy Research will publish studies on quantum risks and possible Bitcoin responses. The reports will detail how computer technology may affect current cryptography systems and identify when network changes might be needed.
Galaxy also formed a Quantum Advisory Council of experts in quantum computing and cryptography. The council will evaluate proposals and advise on research concerning network resilience.
Earlier this month, BitGo implemented services for institutional custody clients, as stated, including quantum risk scoring, safer UTXO management, and migration assistance. A week ago, Blockstream included post-quantum cryptography in its technical priorities for Q2 2026, alongside Liquid and Lightning developments. “Q2 was Blockstream moving from research to release… to OP_CHECKSHRINCS, a signature opcode the whole network can evaluate,” the company noted.
Government action has also accelerated. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued the first set of post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024, as reported, requiring federal agencies to begin preparing better defenses.
According to Galaxy, Bitcoin cannot afford to wait until quantum computers are capable of breaking its systems. Significant protocol changes will need agreement among all developers, miners, and businesses, and could take years of development and testing. Early research is necessary so that teams can evaluate designs, and wallet providers can plan user transitions to new protocols.
The grants may support practical testing before network changes are proposed. Security assessments could detect vulnerabilities in tools before adoption. The initiative is part of early preparation efforts and does not imply an imminent quantum attack.
