Grayscale Files to Convert Litecoin Trust into ETF, Eyes NYSE Arca Listing

-

On September 11, Grayscale filed an amendment to rename its Litecoin Trust as the Grayscale Litecoin Trust ETF, retaining the LTCN ticker. The proposal, which requires regulatory approval and NYSE Arca listing, aims to allow share creation and redemption in baskets, potentially reducing historical price gaps between LTCN and its underlying Litecoin holdings. As of June 30, the trust held $82.3 million in assets and 1.97 million LTC, with 24.25 million shares outstanding. The conversion could improve liquidity and price accuracy for investors, though it remains to be seen whether it will attract new capital or simply benefit existing holders.

If approved, the change would allow the creation and redemption of new shares in baskets, a feature currently unavailable to the trust. This mechanism could reduce the price gaps between LTCN and the value of its Litecoin holdings, improving liquidity for investors.

As of June 30, the trust reported assets of $82.3 million, representing 1.97 million Litecoin. It also had 24.25 million shares outstanding, indicating an established investor base.

The conversion still requires approval from regulators and listing on the NYSE Arca exchange. Historically, LTCN has traded at significant deviations from its net asset value, including a premium of 5,893% and a discount of 67% at different points.

A national exchange listing and the ability to create or redeem shares could help narrow these historical differences. This would make LTCN easier to trade and improve price accuracy.

Litecoin already offers a regulated investment product through Canary’s LTCC ETF, but its small size has attracted limited investor interest. LTCN enters with roughly $82 million in assets and 24 million shares, providing a larger base than existing Litecoin ETFs.

However, the listing will not expand the Litecoin ETF market unless it draws new capital. Rising flows and institutional ownership would confirm new demand, while weak flows would suggest the move only improves liquidity for existing holders.
