Hyperliquid [HYPE] faces a major supply event on October 6th, with 9.92 million tokens valued near $860 million set for release to core contributors. This unlock, representing nearly 3.9 to 4.5% of the circulating supply, follows a September distribution where only 0.19% of tokens were released—far below the intended 2.32%. While Bitwise’s BHYP fund recently added $10.5 million in demand, and the platform’s token burn mechanism removes supply daily, these sources remain too small to fully offset potential heavy selling from contributors.
Hyperliquid’s token supply faces a critical test in early October. According to Tokenomist data, a scheduled distribution on October 6th will unlock 9.92 million HYPE tokens, currently valued near $860 million. This release, representing nearly 3.9–4.5% of the circulating supply, follows an anomalous September distribution where core contributors released only 0.19% of tokens—worth $36.56 million—far below the intended 2.32% allocation. The gap introduces substantial dilution risk if contributors claim and sell heavily.
The scale of the potential unlock significantly exceeds the token’s average daily spot volume. Heavy distributions could cause a tremendous decrease in market liquidity, ultimately putting downward pressure on the price. However, contributor wallet activity will determine if the October distribution causes true selling pressure or another small token distribution.
Institutional demand is building on another side of the liquidity equation. On September 4th, Bitwise’s BHYP fund purchased $10.5 million in HYPE, totaling approximately 123,500 tokens at roughly $85 each. Cumulative purchases by the BHYP investor base now reach $166.3 million. This purchase represents less than one percent of the 9.92 million tokens set for October’s unlock, illustrating how BHYP cannot handle the headline unlock alone.
The platform’s burn mechanism adds continuous demand. In the last 24 hours, $859,500 in fees generated $823,800 in revenue, funding the purchase of 9,730 tokens. Those tokens, worth $829,500 bought near $85.27, were permanently burned. According to OnChain Lens, lifetime removals have reached 48.42 million HYPE, representing 4.84% of the 1 billion max token limit.
