SF Holding is preparing to open a Hong Kong gold vault as the city works to become a global precious-metals center. The vault is expected to begin operations in October inside SF’s complex near Hong Kong International Airport.
One section will offer safe-deposit boxes for valuable assets, while the second will focus on precious metals storage. People familiar with the matter said the facility could hold up to 100 tons of metals.
Hong Kong authorities intend to launch a central clearing system for physical gold trading later this year. They also aim to increase the city’s total vaulting capacity to 2,000 tons within three years.
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is preparing to reintroduce bullion futures trading. The project indicates growing demand for secure storage facilities in Asian financial markets.
SF Holding already has experience in commodity markets as a licensed logistics operator for the Shanghai Gold Exchange. It also assists jewelry stores and mines in China.
The company works with one of the first depots recognized by the London Metal Exchange last year. However, SF is not yet a member of the London Bullion Market Association, an accreditation many bullion merchants require.
