The Open Network plans to rebrand its TON token to Gram, reviving the cryptocurrency’s original name from its 2018 whitepaper. The change, part of a “Make TON Great Again” roadmap, follows Telegram‘s recent takeover of the network. A governance vote showed strong support, with nearly 80% of participating tokens in favor. The rebranding process is expected to take approximately three weeks.
The Open Network announced it is planning to rebrand its Toncoin token to Gram. This revives the original name for the network’s currency as detailed in its first white paper.
Telegram and TON founder Pavel Durov posted that the return to “Gram” marks a new chapter for the project. The transition is scheduled to take around three weeks.
The name “Gram” was abandoned after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission blocked Telegram’s $1.7 billion initial coin offering in 2020. The move follows Telegram’s recent takeover from the TON Foundation as the network’s primary driver.
The network launched a vote on the rebranding proposal, clarifying no swap or migration is required. At the time of writing, 1.8 million TON, representing almost 80%, were pledged in favor.
Durov positioned the token rebrand as the fourth stage of a “Make TON Great Again” roadmap. The first three stages included a blockchain speed upgrade, reduced transaction fees, and the Telegram takeover earlier this year.
“These changes mark a milestone for the network — and a natural moment to refresh how the token is known publicly,” TON stated. The stated endgame is to power a seamless Web3 experience inside Telegram for its one billion users.
TON prices surged more than 15% following the announcement, moving from around $1.95 to top $2.25. The token had retreated to $2.07 by Tuesday morning, remaining down 75% from its June 2024 all-time high of $8.25.
