AI Stocks Tumble as Altman and Amodei Warn of Losing Control Over AI

-

AI stocks opened the week lower after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned about the risks of rapid AI development. Amodei released a 3,800-word essay urging the industry to pace capabilities advancement, while Altman co-signed, stating that AI progress could go “very badly.” Major semiconductor and infrastructure firms including Marvell, SK Hynix, Micron, and Super Micro fell 6%, while Nvidia and Broadcom slipped 3%. In response, President Donald Trump rejected calls to slow AI growth, emphasizing the need to outpace China.

Altman shared his own worries, saying we may “lose control” over the technology and that the concerns have given him “sleepless nights.” A tweet from Watcher.Guru stated: “JUST IN: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backs Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for the AI industry to slow down development.”

In his essay, Amodei said, “Over the last few months, I have become convinced that fully addressing the risks requires even more prudence — not just investing in risk prevention, but pacing the rate of capabilities advancement so that risk prevention has time to keep up.” He added, “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of A.I. models.”

Altman co-signed the message early Monday, stating in an X post that AI progress could go “very badly.” He warned of two threats: losing control of the future to AI, and an excessive concentration of power. He also revealed that OpenAI will not IPO this year.

As a result, several AI stocks fell Monday. Marvell (MRVL), SK Hynix (SKHY), Micron (MU), and Super Micro (SMCI) each dropped 6%. CoreWeave (CRWV), SanDisk (SNDK), Intel (INTC), and AMD (AMD) were off by more than 4%, while Nvidia (NVDA) and Broadcom (AVGO) slipped 3%.

Despite the warnings, U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday pushed back on the safety concerns. Reuters reported that Trump said, “We’re leading China in AI. We’re the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins.” Firms are now announcing initiatives to limit work and spending on AI, which may cause further declines this week.
