Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire. “This Ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activity, and also a prison swap of 1,000 prisoners from each Country,” he stated.
Trump noted the request was made directly by him and expressed appreciation for the agreement by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He added that both parties have opened talks in an attempt to end the conflict, which he described as the biggest since World War II.
Bitcoin’s price reacted positively to the news, jumping by over $1,000 to trade well above $80,000. The cryptocurrency had dipped to around $79,100 the previous day after being rejected at the $83,000 level earlier in the week.
The market impact was notably more modest compared to its reaction to the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran. Bitcoin surged from approximately $68,000 to $73,000 in minutes following that earlier geopolitical development.
Very few larger-cap alternative cryptocurrencies posted substantial gains alongside Bitcoin’s move. Notable performers included SOL, which gained 5.5%, and ZEC, which rose 10%.
