Gemini Secures Singapore MPI License, Expanding Regulated Crypto Services

-

Gemini has received a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), announced on Wednesday. The license allows the crypto exchange to offer regulated digital payment token services and cross‑border money transfers in Singapore. Gemini obtained in‑principle approval in October 2024 and began transferring its Singapore clients to the locally registered entity in April 2025. The exchange has been serving Singapore customers since 2020 with spot trading, custody, and OTC trading. Co‑founder Cameron Winklevoss noted the firm’s strong local presence, while Tyler Winklevoss called Singapore a key node for retail and institutional clients.

Gemini received a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), as stated in a Wednesday announcement. The license permits the firm to operate as Gemini Digital Payments Singapore, Pte. Ltd., which is listed in the MAS Financial Institutions Directory as a provider of regulated digital payment token services and cross‑border money transfer services.

Gemini initially obtained in‑principle approval from MAS in October 2024. In April 2025, the exchange started transferring its Singapore clients from Gemini Trust Company to Gemini Digital Payments Singapore. The MPI license provides a well‑defined regulatory foundation for Gemini’s payments and digital asset offerings in the country.

MPI licensing allows corporations to offer payment services under regulation without the restrictions that apply to smaller payment institution licenses. However, larger payment operations may carry bigger risks, so MAS imposes a broader regulatory framework.

Gemini has been serving clients in Singapore since 2020, offering crypto spot trading, digital asset custody, and OTC trading. Co‑founder and President Cameron Winklevoss pointed out that the firm has a strong presence in Singapore. CEO Tyler Winklevoss termed Singapore “a key node for serving both retail and institutional clients.”

The approval provides Gemini with the necessary base for expansion into the Singapore market and beyond.
