Billionaire investor Mark Cuban has sold the majority of his Bitcoin holdings, stating the cryptocurrency failed to act as a reliable macroeconomic hedge. Cuban noted Bitcoin did not meet his expectations as “digital gold” during recent geopolitical tensions and U.S. dollar fluctuations, though he remains optimistic about Ethereum.

Cuban previously maintained a crypto portfolio consisting mainly of Bitcoin and Ethereum. He once believed Bitcoin was superior to gold as it could not be manipulated or controlled.

“His view changed after observing Bitcoin’s performance during geopolitical tensions involving Iran and dollar weakness,” according to a podcast appearance. He noted that gold outperformed while Bitcoin failed to behave as a protective asset.

The anticipation for Bitcoin as a hedge stems from its capped supply and decentralized nature. Investors believed it would rise when fiat currencies weakened, but Cuban argues this did not translate to consistent safe-haven performance.

Market observations during the Iran conflict showed varied outcomes where gold rose. However, Bitcoin has been performing well globally during that same conflict period.

Cuban appears more optimistic about Ethereum due to its use cases and stronger ecosystem. He also favors clearer cryptocurrency regulations to facilitate institutional involvement.

The debate continues over whether Bitcoin is digital gold or a risky speculative asset. Its market behavior often correlates with equities during stress periods, leaving its classification unresolved.

Bitcoin is currently trading at approximately $77,653 with a slight 24-hour decrease. The asset continues to dominate the broader cryptocurrency landscape despite recent volatility.
