Crypto payment service MoonPay has launched a dedicated app within OpenAI’s ChatGPT, allowing users to generate purchase links for digital assets like Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC directly inside the chatbot. While the app facilitates the initial step, users must still complete MoonPay’s standard Know-Your-Customer verification and checkout process on its website to finalize transactions. The company views AI assistants as a new distribution channel, aiming to educate consumers through conversational interfaces.
MoonPay has launched a dedicated app in ChatGPT Apps, enabling users to buy cryptocurrencies directly within OpenAI’s chatbot. This allows users to generate checkout links for assets including Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC without leaving the interface.
The app joins other crypto-related services on ChatGPT, such as those from Kraken, OKX, CryptoAudit, and RealOpen. Unlike apps that only query blockchain data, MoonPay’s app facilitates the purchase process and aims to educate consumers.
MoonPay Blockchain Engineer and Product Lead Kevin Arifin stated “We’ve seen this with commerce and AI, where a lot of people get shopping recommendations within ChatGPT.” He noted that people are increasingly conducting financial research within such chatbots, highlighting the absence of an integrated crypto on-ramp.
Users can ask ChatGPT about a cryptocurrency and request to buy a specified amount, prompting the chatbot to generate a MoonPay checkout link. This link directs the user to MoonPay’s website to complete KYC verification and link a wallet.
Arifin described the experience as akin to having an educational broker, stating “It’s like a broker that sits by you, not making financial recommendations, but educating you about the asset you’re buying.” He suggested future developments could see AI taking more direct actions beyond generating links.
Users with existing MoonPay accounts can sign in directly within the process, using their last payment method for faster checkout. The move is part of MoonPay’s broader push into AI-driven crypto tools.
Earlier this month, the company acquired AI trading startup Dawn Labs and launched a trading copilot. It also recently introduced a virtual Mastercard that allows AI agents to spend stablecoins from crypto wallets at online merchants.
Arifin emphasized the app is designed more for consumer education than autonomous trading, calling conversational interaction a “huge unlock.” He acknowledged that users operating solely within ChatGPT are confined to OpenAI’s ecosystem, pointing to emerging local AI clients as an important next step.
Arifin framed AI assistants as a fundamental shift in digital access, stating “These apps, whether it’s ChatGPT, Claude—they’re the new front door of the internet.” He noted they facilitate deeper, multi-turn research compared to traditional search engines.
