UK politician Nigel Farage is under parliamentary investigation after purchasing a $1.8 million property following a $6.7 million personal gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. The probe centers on whether the gift, received before Farage took office, should have been declared. This occurs amid broader UK legislative efforts to temporarily ban cryptocurrency donations to political figures over national security concerns.
Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform Party, acquired the property in May 2024, weeks before announcing his candidacy in the general election. He and his party maintain no wrongdoing occurred, stating the gift’s timing exempts it from certain reporting requirements.
The parliamentary probe follows months of increasing regulatory scrutiny into political crypto donations. In February 2025, Matt Western, chair of the UK’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, urged a temporary ban on such donations.
Western cited foreign influence risks, stating “As the security environment worsens and the UK’s military role in Europe grows, the value of influencing the UK’s political positions… is likely to increase.” The UK government advanced a corresponding legislative proposal in March.
This legislation must still pass through Parliament and receive approval from King Charles III. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated the government “will act decisively to protect our democracy” regarding the proposed curbs. Farage has previously stated the Reform Party will fight bans on crypto political donations.
