Pi Network faces a critical protocol upgrade deadline on September 15, with version 27 set to enhance smart‑contract authentication and expand network capabilities. Meanwhile, a social media surge followed Elon Musk’s remarks on the mathematical constant pi, interpreted by some as a token endorsement, though PI’s price remained subdued near $0.09, rising only 7% over two weeks while Bitcoin and Ethereum surged 22‑30%.
Pi Network has scheduled its next major protocol update for September 15. Version 27, described as the last in the current upgrade cycle, will introduce more flexible and secure smart‑contract authentication, giving accounts and apps improved ways to authorize transactions. Previous deployments experienced delays: version 25 arrived later than the July 22 target, and version 26 also missed its initial deadline.
The upgrade follows a series of protocol revisions beginning with version 19.6 at the start of 2026, which laid the foundations for smart‑contract capabilities. The core team now plans to finalise the sequence with v27, adding newer protocol features and expanding the network’s smart‑contract capacity.
Speculation about an endorsement from Elon Musk circulated after he commented on a user’s mathematical discussion. In an X post, Musk stated that “Pi can be (and has been) used in integer form for calculating interplanetary trajectories. The relevant maximum number of digits of pi is how many are needed to describe the volume of the Universe in Planck cubes (voxels).”
The X account BSCN reported that Musk’s reply triggered a frenzy within the Pi Network ecosystem, noting that “what started as a casual reply to a user’s comment has sparked a huge frenzy within the Pi Network ecosystem” and that the response was seen as a form of endorsement. No further interaction from Musk followed, and he did not clarify any connection to Pi Network’s native token.
Price data shows PI trading below $0.10 with minimal volatility. The token rose roughly 7% over the past two weeks, underperforming a broader crypto rebound where Bitcoin gained 22% and Ethereum rose 30%. Analyst Crypto With Gopal argued that the price is squeezing around the $0.09 zone as volatility contracts, opining that a breakout above could set the stage for a pump toward $0.15.
